The names and titles of Jesus Christ throughout the Bible are wonderful, majestic, and awe-inspiring. We will look at many of His names and titles, using scripture as the source of the truth. We will see many names and titles from the Old Testament that are names and titles of Jesus, the One and Only God, the God that is One. The moment God revealed Himself as Jesus Christ every last name and title that God had in the Old Testament became the names and titles of Christ.
The beautiful names and titles of Jesus Christ that describe Him, or who He is or His love for humanity:
Using scripture from the Old Testament we will look at some the names God gave himself that would become the names of Jesus after He revealed himself in the flesh:
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth (John 1:14).
Starting with the Shema, we find Jehovah and Elohim:
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD (Deuteronomy 6:4).
Jehovah - LORD - Yĕhovah (yeh·hō·vä') (H3068) - the proper name of the one true God
Elohim - God - 'elohiym (el·ō·hēm') (H430) - God
After the victory over the Amelkites in Rephedim (Exodus 17:8-16), Moses built an altar and called it Jehovah-Nissi:
And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi (Exodus 17:15).
Jehovah Nissi - Jehovanissi - Yĕhovah nicciy (yeh·hō·vä' nis·sē') (H3071) Jehovah-nissi = "Jehovah is my banner".
In practical terms, a banner goes first - God goes before us, He leads us to victory.
God provided Abraham a ram (Genesis 22:8) for an offering instead of his son Issac and Abraham called the place Jehovah-Jireh.
And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen (Genesis 22:14).
Jehovah-Jireh - Jehovahjireh - Yĕhovah yireh (yeh·hō·vä' yir·eh') (H3070) - "Jehovah will see (to it)"
Jehovah sees to everything, He is the great provider!
God reminds the children of Israel that He is their Rapha, their healing God.
And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee (Exodus 15:26).
LORD (Jehovah) that Heals - rapha' (rä·fä') (H7495)- to heal, make healthful 1. (Qal) to heal, of God
We are grateful that one of the names of Jesus is Healer, and that we can call on the name of Jesus, believing that He can and will heal us.
The Lord said to Gideon (Judges 6:23), "Peace be unto thee" so Gideon built an altar and called it Jehovah-Shalom.
Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites (Judges 6:24).
One of the names of Jesus is "Prince of Peace" as described in Isaiah 9:6 with Jehovah-Shalom being the root word in that blessed verse of scripture.
God spoke to Jacob telling him not to fear going to Egypt, because He was going to make a great nation of Israel by going to Egypt.
And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation (Genesis 46:3).
God - El - el(āl) (H410) - name for God meaning strength or power
We know Jesus was given all power as God:
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth (Matthew 28:18).
And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect (Genesis 17:1).
Almighty God - El Shaddai - Shadday(shad·dah'·ē) (H7706) - Shaddai, the Almighty (of God)
One of the names of Jesus we see in the New Testament is "the Almighty" as He declared in Revelation 1:8
Melchizedek king of Salem blessed Abraham of the most high God:
And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth (Genesis 14:19).
In Acts 16:17, you can see that the Most High God is one of the names of Jesus that the Apostle Paul used to describe our blessed Savior.
After Abraham made a covenant with Abimelech he called on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God:
And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God (Genesis 21:33).
Everlasting God - El Olam - owlam(ō·läm) - (H5769) - everlasting, indefinite or unending future, eternity.
Again, one of the names of Jesus is the everlasting God as the Apostle Paul said was made known to all the Gentiles through obedience to Christ (Romans 16:24-26).
The Psalmist, giving the God the glory due unto his name:
The voice of the Lord is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the Lord is upon many waters (Psalm 29:3).
The God of Glory - El Kavod - kabowd(kä·vōde) (H3519) - Majesty, glory splendor.
Similarly in the New Testament, James writes (James 2:1) about Jesus being the Lord of glory.
Isaiah was prophesying in Isaiah 5:15-16 that man would be humbled but the Holy God would be exalted and sanctified in righteousness:
But the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness (Isaiah 5:16).
The Holy God - El Kadosh - qadowsh (kä·dōshe) (H6918) - Sacred, holy, set apart consecrated.
The names of Jesus in the New Testament include Holy Holy Holy Lord God Almighty. Holy in the Greek essentially means the same thing as Holy in Hebrew i.e. set apart, consecrated. Jesus is the Holy God.
As we have seen there are many names of Jesus Christ, and we know Jesus is the only name that is above every name:
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:9-11).
